Postcards (From Easy Street) - Fic Index.

Title: Postcards (From Easy Street)
Author name: [livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89
Artist name: [livejournal.com profile] mashimero
Genre: SPN AU
Pairings: Sam/Jess, Sam/Dean (also Dean/OMC, Dean/Cassie, Sam/Zach)
Rating: NC-17
Wordcount: 43,200
Summary: She's his baby brother's new girlfriend.

He's some stranger who knows more about her boyfriend than she does.

Together they fight crime have sex talk on the phone a lot.

(Oh, and also there's some guy named Sam who keeps getting his ass kicked and has a run-in with some incubi-infected frat guys.)

Notes/Acknowledgments: Betad by [livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon, [livejournal.com profile] ashley, and [livejournal.com profile] dea_liberty.

I knew exactly what I wanted to do for this year's Big Bang. I wanted to give Sam DID and explore that. Wee!Sam, Stanford, Series, I wanted to do it all. But then I realized this fic wanted to be written in short bursts, because all of Sam's alters wanted to have their say, and I didn't know if I could keep it up for 20k.

Cue panicking when I realized I had no fucking idea what to do.

And somehow I decided on this. I don't remember exactly how, though I think it's safe to say that the people to blame include; [livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon, [livejournal.com profile] ashley, [livejournal.com profile] unperfectwolf, [livejournal.com profile] gigglingkat and [livejournal.com profile] stephanometra.

So this is my fic, as it came to be. Sort of. The idea went along the lines of this:

Dean randomly realizes one day that Sam probably wouldn't think to tell someone about his deadly allergy to X. Cue freaking out. Dean sends postcards to Jess, telling her things like that and how to keep Sammy alive, well, and relatively happy. They become letters, which become phone calls.

I'd like to thank all my friends, but [livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon specifically, because she's the only reason I didn't just give up several times.

HI!

So, I've started reading your fic, and so far I really really love it. Well, almost. I feel kinda bad being a bit nit-picky, but because this seems to be such a good fic, I feel that I should share.

OK, so I've got a thing about numbers, and I always start counting when they show up in a fic. And I did the same in your, and I noticed that you made Sam kinda slow when he runs. Well, not slow, slow, but not as fast as he should be. I don't really do miles, but I know km:s. And I've participated in a few 10k runs. And with the speed you've given Sam, he should complete 10k in a little more than 50 min. Now the bad news. This is about the same time that my 55 yo dad runs at. Someone really fast should have a time at 35-40 min (world record at about 30). I think this would put his time for a mile at about 6 min. I think.

I hope that you don't mind my comment, I really DO like the story (Usually doesn't bother pointing out stuff like this if the fic isn't good enough) and now I'm going back to read the rest of it...

Dude, don't even feel bad about being nitpicky about that! I'm so freakin' OCD, I like knowing when I've messed up like that.

My problem is mostly that I don't run. Like, at all. And I tried to find out what would be fast without Sueing him up. Sites and sites later I was annoyed and started asking friends. No two who gave me the same answer. So I kinda just evened it out and tried to hope that Sam wasn't a snail.

Oops? How about this, is this better?

"I don't know. It takes me forty, forty-five minutes, so... about ten clicks."

Zach blinks at him for a moment. Out of the corner of his eye, Sam can see Jess dragging her finger across the table, probably trying to remember how to convert kilometers into miles. "How much is that here on Earth?"

"On Earth, it's still ten clicks, but outside of the military, it's about six miles."

Becky takes advantage of Zach's distraction to steal the mostly uneaten half of his pastrami sandwich, taking a big bite out of it before swallowing and asking, "Wow, so you can run a mile in, what, seven minutes? That's really fast, right? It sounds fast."

"Six minutes." Not that he's nitpicky or anything.

yeah. that sounds about right. 40-45 mins on a evryday 10k run. that is really impressive but not impossible, which i think is wath you are giong for.(hope you checked the calculations for the mile stuff. because my guess was just a... guess.)

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2008-07-24 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! And thank you again for the comment, I'm glad you pointed out my misstep for me, because I never would've known I made him slow.

And, yeah, I check the km = miles thing with a calc I found off Google.

Hi :) I just finished reading this and I loved it! And you really wrote it out of order? I found that the story really flowed and made complete sense. I love your Jess. She's weird and unique and I like how this story was written in three different point of views. Though, the two most prominent were Jess and Dean. You had a whole bunch of details and I really like that kind of thing to read. It makes it so much more interesting! Gosh, lol. But the ending was very abrupt; kind of like there's more to the story but suddenly stopped. I hope there'll be more! :( *wibbly lip and teary eyes* I don't think anyone's ever written an AU where Jess joins them. Anyway, great job. :D

and lol, I'm actually around Davis right now!

I seem to have this thing about writing long fic in order, I wrote my Big Bang last year all out of order too. It tends to work in the end because my betas are fucking amazing and go so very far above and beyond their duties.

I'm glad you liked the details, I love putting them in. My favorite parts of fics are usually small details, like Sam tripping over his shoelaces or Dean only using a certain toothpaste.

I know the ending was kind of abrupt but I knew I had to make a very clean, clear break with this fic otherwise I never would've been able to finish it in time (and very nearly almost didn't).

As for more?

Let me tell you something, baby. LMFAO. I discovered spyware on my computer last night, and I've alternated between trying very hard to FIX it, and read your fic, WHICH I'M FUCKING LOVING, but my computer keeps freaking crashing on me, BUT I CANNOT STOP READING YOUR FIC, and I can't print it out, because, hi, virus or something keeps making me crash.

Um. I just wanted to say I'M FREAKING LOVING THIS SO MUCH, SO HARD, SO FAR. I'm on Chapter 5 (after 4 hours, Jesus christing computer), AND I WANTED TO STOP AND SAY I LOVE IT, just in case the computer actually dies forever and I disappear and don't get the chance to say how awesome it is.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I'm glad you like it! I mean, wow, you even pushed your way through a major crap-attack to get to it. That's just so awesome!

Hi, I know this is a long shot but I was wondering if you by any chance have your story in a single file that you'd be willing to email me? amalthia @ gmail.com

thanks for your time

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2008-07-22 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, sweetie, I'll send it right now!

Hee! Totally just comment to it with this:

Really? I'll check and see if I tweaked out my @livejournal.com address by, like, unclicking a box or something.

And your email may have gotten to me, I'm not sure because I totally check my LJ folder before my main inbox. Win, right? :P

Well I used the email listed on your profile page so maybe it's still on route?

I don't normally get weird delievery messages about email.

Re: p.s. thanks!

Maybe. LJ could just be fucking up on it's own, though.

I wouldn't put it past them. :) In any case, I re-sent my original email to the address you used to send me the story. If you get the same email twice, my apologies in advance. It's just last time I got this error message the recieving party never did get the email.

So, your summary is kinda the best thing ever.
I'm going to be crying because there isn't more of this universe out there from now on, aren't I?

[identity profile] alistra.livejournal.com 2008-07-25 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm saving this for the right moment, but even if I couldn't get back into the show, I am very much looking forward to reading this. =) Congratulations on getting it done!

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much, sweetie! I hope you liked it. :D

[identity profile] alistra.livejournal.com 2008-07-27 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mid-chapter three and love it so much already. Just needed to say. =) Must admit though, that I love the Dean bits best and have found myself skimming over Jess/Sam bits in the first chapter to get to them. *is ashamed* The further I get though, the more I get into the story. Am off to read on now, hooray! *runs off*

(The description of dean's hangover was pure brilliance).

[identity profile] braveinnewworld.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So I just read this in one go and can I just say awesome?!! Absolutely loved it! It made me laugh out loud more than a few times, blush once and hope there would be more all the time. And then I read there is going to be a whole au based on this! Loooooove!! Friended the verse site immediately. Actually, I'll friend you too if you don't mind just so I don't miss anything. I liked Jess before and you made me like her a whole lot more. So yeah, what I am trying to say here is: thanks for writing such a great story, can't wait for an update on the sequel that's not a sequel.
