When Jess was seven there was a little boy in her class named Cody. He couldn't read, his clothes were too big, and he always brought peanut butter sandwiches in a plastic grocery bag for lunch. Jess didn't make fun of him like the other kids, but she didn't talk to him either. One day, Cody didn't come back to class, and the teachers didn't want to talk about him anymore. Cody, and the way he completely vanished and no one cared, is why Jess decided she wanted to be a social worker.
Jess's second boyfriend ever left her for her first boyfriend. She was mad, and angry, and hurt. Then they let her watch them make out. It was all downhill from there.
Sam has this pair of thick fleece shorts that are amazingly comfortable. He hasn't worn since his and Jess's second date, when Jess threw up and had to borrow them and then decided to keep them for herself.

Dean has a constant soundtrack running through his head, and at any given moment he can tell you exactly what song is playing at this point in his movie.
Dean doesn't actually mind chick flicks. He even likes a few—but not a lot, because most of them are steaming pieces of shit. Talking about feelings is all fine and dandy so long as he doesn't have to do it and it's not his feelings being talked about.
Dean's first word after the fire was "Sammy," loud and scared after a bad nightmare.

His first marriage dissolved because he couldn't handle her boyfriends and she couldn't handle his drinking. He's better now, he's got his Ten Year chip and he's a sponsor.
He was kind of a punk when he was a kid. Standard middle child shit begging for attention. It came to a head at 16, with a pretty spectacular car accident and a best friend who's now a paraplegic. "Joy riding" is bad.
