Watch me Nerd (like I'm in a herd, not the squad).

I'm a great big loser nerd.
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (4:54 PM):
ty
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (4:54 PM):
I know
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:54 PM):
NP.
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:54 PM):
:P
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:54 PM):
This time it's EXTRA special, though.
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:55 PM):
Because in this fic Sammy just said his first word, Dean, and I'm trying not to twitch.
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:55 PM):
Why?
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:56 PM):
Because the reason babies say, "Mama," before they say, "Dada," is because the M sound is easier to make, the D is hard because the tongue has to be placed at the front ridge behind where the teeth come in, and it's too complicated for baby to understand.
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (4:56 PM):
*facepalm*
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:56 PM):
I can see you facepalming, you know.
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:57 PM):
XD
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:58 PM):
The only way for "Dean" to be Sam's first word is if he's one of those kids who doesn't speak until very late, because then he'd have enough conscious time to listen to the words and watch the mouths to imitate.
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (4:59 PM):
So, really, Dean and John were probably, "Eeen" and "Papa" for a while, because "Dada" just turns into "Aah" and "Daddy" turns into a long A.
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:00 PM):
If Steve were here she'd be so proud.
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:00 PM):
XD
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:02 PM):
But, yeah. [At the age of two] it's unlikely that Sam's first word was, "Dean."
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:02 PM):
...I feel like I need to post this now, to show off my Geek creds.
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:02 PM):
it could be if he left off the d sound
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:03 PM):
Dean would still recognize it as his name

[Cut for fic quoting]

[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:03 PM):
I didn't say it was that way in the fic
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:03 PM):
Ah.
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:03 PM):
I'm just saying it's not impossible
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:04 PM):
Well, yes, it could have been, but it wouldn't really be Dean's name, it'd be Sammy's name for Dean.
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:04 PM):
Like how Deano is John's name for him.
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:04 PM):
*sigh*
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:04 PM):
I know, I'm nerding.
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:05 PM):
But this actually makes me wonder what he called Dean. Because I know very few people who have been called by the same version of their name their whole life, especially if they have a younger sibling.
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:05 PM):
I have no idea
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:06 PM):
Trufax: I have a cousin who, until she was four or so, thought her big brother's name was, "Nodon't!"
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:07 PM):
lol
[livejournal.com profile] clex_monkie89 says (5:07 PM):
He was a cool kind until he became a preppy douchebag,
[livejournal.com profile] waterofthemoon says (5:08 PM):
heh

...but where in the world did you hear that the "d" sound is hard for babies? It's one of the easiest.

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure? My soc teacher last year was telling us about it and she showed us the article she had found. I could've swore it was D... Man, now I wish I hadn't tossed the thing. Or at least remember some of the technical words so I could Google it correctly.

[identity profile] ryo-girl.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I had just read an article that said that mama is easier to say, but when I actually looked into it, everything says dada is easier to say.

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
See, and I was just telling Jelloh that I had heard it from and article too. I'm thinking it's like the bumblebee; how it shouldn't be able to fly, but does. Babies shouldn't be able to say "Dada" that young, yet do?

You wouldn't happen to have a link to that article, would you?

[identity profile] ryo-girl.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've been trying to find it again - I'll let you know if I do.

But if you actually say "mama" and "dada" - dada does seem like it would be easier to say, because the 'd' sound is like a hard breath out, and the m sounds you have to curl your lips?

[identity profile] ryo-girl.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry I can't find it! Usually I can, that's so weird. It was like two or three months ago though.

Everything I read trying to find it says that "dada" is easier, and a lot of moms were saying that HAD been their kid's first word. And then some were saying that they didn't say either first, they said like "bye" and things like that. I guess it depends on the kid.

lol nerd. XD

um... My first word was Da-da-da-da-da-da-DEEEEEEEEE.

Apparently I was quite loud and proud and kept it up for over an hour....

Trufax: I have a cousin who, until she was four or so, thought her big brother's name was, "Nodon't!"

now i need that fic of what dean's name was to sammy when he was that little!

(my first word was NO.)

Because I know very few people who have been called by the same version of their name their whole life, especially if they have a younger sibling.

My name's Danielle. My little sister called me Nano (with a long a).
