clex_monkie89: Close-cropped picture of Sam and Dean Winchester sitting far closer than normal people. (SPN - Geekboy - Sammy)

Sam Winchester and iPods.

Okay. So.

Sam Winchester has an iPod. This is what I think. I think he saved up money and saved up money and Jess bought him one as a gift. I think this is the moment Sam fell in love with her because growing up with Dean for a brother I think giving music is the Winchester equivalencey of getting on your knees and blowing them.

But that's all just background crap.

What I want to know is what songs are on Sam's iPod.

What are his mixes called?

When does he listen to what songs?

Why?

I think that he has a handful of Metallica songs and Hair Band songs not necessarily because he likes them but because they remind him of Dean and Dad. And I think that he listens to Alice And Chains "Rooster" a lot because it makes him think of John.

He's gotta have the required Emo songs/bands, although the only ones I have knowledge of are My Chemical Romance, Deathcab For Cutie and... Saves the Day? I think that's their name.

I think he has I'm Not Okay (I Promise) and When Soul Meets Body and At Your Funeral. Mainly because those are a few of the songs I could think of and they fit Emo!Boy.

I ask mainly because I listen to Hard Rock and Classic Rock (Dean style) most and my brother listens to underground shit, rap and Emo so I don't really have a big knowledge of everything out there.

That and I'm incredibly curious.

P.S. Sam has Monster Mash and One Eyed, One Armed, Flying, Purple People Eater because they're cheesy as fuck and make him laugh.

Somebody needs to write that fic.

Very much so. I have to remember to offer that up somewhere. I'd write it but I've already got too many PB and SPN on my list as it is.

I am! You have no idea how hard it is to do when I keep forgetting where I've DLd it too. I did 14 like, six times before I found all the copies...

You think that's a lot? I was too tired to type up the rest of my thoughts on the matter, I think I'm gonna have a whole list of songs for him soon.

YES. Just, yes. God, I love that so much and I love you for thinking about this because to me, music is so important and says so much about a person/character. Sam is definitely an iPod boy. I can see him listening to Death Cab, probably The Postal Service too and Franz Ferdinand. I think I see him as sort of emo/indie boy, but not really emo and more like, mainstream indie, not totalyl adventurous on his own. There's definitely some '80s metal and classic rock stuff on there, but he's probably kind of embarassed about it and also by his extensive knowledge in general because Dean was always all music nazi about it so Sam couldn't avoid knowing and liking more than he thinks he "should" because it's not cool.

Ok, I totally need to give this more thought. Coldplay? Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. I'll get back to you after I've had more time to ponder properly, because I can so feel this taking over my brain.

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. Just, yes. God, I love that so much and I love you for thinking about this because to me, music is so important and says so much about a person/character.

I'm a totally firm believer that everyone has a soundtrack whether they know it or not, and some songs just fit perfectly into pieces of your life and what you listen to says so much about who you are as a person.

I think I see him as sort of emo/indie boy, but not really emo and more like, mainstream indie, not totalyl adventurous on his own.

Yeah I see him having a lot of "alternative rock" on there too because it's mostly wuss rock and demi-emo-lite. I see him having more than a few "Live" songs and maybe one or two really underground bands that a friend introduced him too that he took up stalking. I see him having a love/hate relationship with The White Stripes but listening to Seven Nation Army like it's a religious hymn.

I see him having Johnny Cash on there because Cash is nearly universal and even Dean liked him though for the life of me I must say that I don't think he's ever once listened to Ring of Fire because it makes him sick just to hear the title. I think maybe he has some loud, obnoxious music (Static X maybe, Drowning Pool) that he puts on when he feels like beating the crap out of something because it gets his blood pumping.

but he's probably kind of embarassed about it and also by his extensive knowledge in general because Dean was always all music nazi about it so Sam couldn't avoid knowing and liking more than he thinks he "should" because it's not cool.

I think he's got an entire full list of songs that he blames on Dean and I think that when other people see them on his iPod he scrolls past them and says he just grabbed a bunch of things offline and he doesn't know what they all are yet (Because he would never admit to liking them even a little) and he really needs to "get around to deleteing them."

Ok, I totally need to give this more thought.

It's insane, isn't it?

Coldplay? Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. I'll get back to you after I've had more time to ponder properly, because I can so feel this taking over my brain.

You know he got them on there. I see Fix You for COldplay and I think he probably has every Nirvana and Foo song there is and I think he listens to Kurt's cover of Man Who Sold The World and Foo's My Hero and The Best of You so much that he can sing them word for word in tune without any music to acompany him.

[identity profile] jetpants.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a totally firm believer that everyone has a soundtrack whether they know it or not, and some songs just fit perfectly into pieces of your life and what you listen to says so much about who you are as a person.

Oh, absolutely, to all of that. I can divide up my life into years or seasons that I was obsessed with certain music, and if I hear certain things it just insantly takes me back, more than anything else could, really specifically like "oh, fall 2001" or whatever. So, now I'm totally seeing Sam like this, he'll have certain albums and songs that when he hears them, he'll just instantly be back to where ever he was when he heard it - whatever town they happened to be living in then, what grade he was in, what they were hunting, maybe even how well or not well he was getting along with John or Dean at the time, just - crazy little details that you don't remember otherwise, but certain music just brings it out.

Oh, yes! I forgot about the White Stripes, that's perfect, the love/hate thing and Seven Nation Army, because seriously who doesn't like that song regardless of your opinion of the band.

Ok and the more thought I said I was giving to this manifested in me actually opening a document and calling it "Sam's ipod" and now I've got a list of bands - besides Nirvana and the Foos I see him having every Weezer album, and I'm debating whether or not he could be a Radiohead nerd, or just has a couple of albums. For other modern/indie-ish stuff besides what I already mentioned I'm thinking stuff like Modest Mouse, Snow Patrol, the last two Tegan & Sara albums, some Belle & Sebastian and hell maybe even David Gray for mellowish, maybe American Idiot and another Green Day album, the second Oasis and first Elastica albums, NIN's Closer...and I need to cool it before I just give him my entire iTunes library, hah.

I see him having Johnny Cash on there because Cash is nearly universal and even Dean liked him though for the life of me I must say that I don't think he's ever once listened to Ring of Fire because it makes him sick just to hear the title.

Oooh, yes yes. I was thinking about Dean music the other day too, what other than his "greatest hits of mullet rock" he might like, and Johnny Cash was one thing I came up with, because I see him being totally cranky and cynical about music and not bothering with anything new, but I can totally see him going back to stuff like that, and obviously the Stones and maybe even some Bob Dylan? And, I see Sam having no problem at all sharing those things with Dean, and they would definitely remind him of Dean and maybe even John as well. And you know, I bet they ALL used to fight over the stereo, and there would have been only certain areas of common ground where they could agree.

...ok, stay tuned for pt. 2, my comment is too long.

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
So, now I'm totally seeing Sam like this, he'll have certain albums and songs that when he hears them, he'll just instantly be back to where ever he was when he heard it

Oh man, I totally believe this. I'm convinced that he has Hit Me Baby One More Time on there because he can remember the very first time he heard that song and that he and Dean were having a sleepover, which consisted of them both sleeping in the kitchen and talking about the few friends they've had in the places they've been and holy fuck my heart hurts for these boys now. *Clings to them*

because seriously who doesn't like that song regardless of your opinion of the band.

Exactly! I bet Dean would even like it a little maybe if Sammy ever got him to listen to it.

Ok and the more thought I said I was giving to this manifested in me actually opening a document and calling it "Sam's ipod"

Hee, mine has a table. It's 100 down by 3 across (Song title/Artist/Mix-why?).

...and I need to cool it before I just give him my entire iTunes library, hah.

DUde I have nine DVD-R's full of MP3s I'm going to be looking through here soon. I'm pretty sure that this 100 is gonna have to be expanded soon.

And you know, I bet they ALL used to fight over the stereo, and there would have been only certain areas of common ground where they could agree.

See with John's taste in music I'm going with my Dads. My Dad listens to classic rock (Ala Dean) and the newer rock along with things like The Eagles and Meatloaf and George Michael and Puddle of Mudd and Dave Matthews Band and Matchbox 20 and I just really think that John is the type of guy who can turn the radio on and find a song he likes within a minute or two.

FLAIL. Gah, kitchen sleepover is just the most adorable and best thing ever. They'd have to listen to the radio, right, because that would be the only thing in the kitchen, but there wouldn't be any stations that either of them could remotely tolerate, so it would be mocking bad songs, something they could actually agree on. My heart hurts for them all the time and somehow that just makes me love them more and more and more.

Exactly! I bet Dean would even like it a little maybe if Sammy ever got him to listen to it.

Ok, and now the fic I want (to write? maybe) is Dean losing some kind of a bet, and he has to actually listen to, say, five songs of Sam's choosing on his ipod and not made insulting comments or pass judgement until he's listened to them all at least twice and then be honest. And he would maybe grudgingly admit to liking them, but there woul dhave to be at least one that he would refuse to say he liked.

Hee, mine has a table. It's 100 down by 3 across (Song title/Artist/Mix-why?).

Oh, that is so much more organised. Now I need to just make some playlists in my iTunes for if (when!) I write some kinda fic. Sountrack, baby.

That sounds about right, yeah. When it was his turn to pick the music, he'd just turn on the radio and be ok with whatever, Dean would roll his eyes and maybe bitch a bit and I don't see Sam really minding that much, maybe just being kind of bored by it. Oh! The busted up walkman! They would fight over that on roadtrips when John had had enough of their music on the stereo and hijacked it for himself.

God, I'm way too obsessed with this. This show just pushes all my music geek buttons. Or, all my geek buttons in general ;P

Oh, do it do it DO IT! I love the image, so so so much.

Oh of course, and they would totally try and remember the words so they could torture Dad with sing-alongs when they got bored.

*snarfs* Yeah, now I'm imagining them randomly busting out Britney and Backstreet Boys songs or something, so badly out of tune and horrible and John glowering and eventually threatening to not stop for dinner if they don't shut up. ...and I just realised 99% of all this music-related stuff is taking place on the road, hah. This show has brainwashed me into full-time roadtrip mode.

Dude, Kripke is a total music nerd. He told the WB he was using the music he wanted and none of their "crap." Which means I love him.

That is instant love. I hate that so many shows now just have the same random music that is being whored by record companies and has nothing at all to do with the story or tone of the show. SPN is like a good movie sountrack and has a theme. So much love.

part two

[identity profile] jetpants.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the other things I was thinking is, I bet when he first got interested in music, Sam just went along with whatever his older brother was listening to, because that's what kids do, but then when he was maybe 14, 15, he would have started getting into his own stuff, new stuff kids at school were into and whatever, and he probably would have started trying to foist music off on Dean himself, mocking Dean's tastes and telling him to stop living in the dark ages. But, the thing is, Dean totally isn't old enough to be that stuck in the past and just not bothering to get into whatever "the kids" like, it's 100% a conscious choice on his part, that that's the kind of music he likes, and he's completely nerdy and maybe even a bit record collectory about it so they fight and bicker a lot over who gets to listen to what and Dean always tries to end it with an "I'm the oldest, so there" but Sam has the puppy face so it doesn't work all the time, but sometimes he'd be so stubborn and cranky that even the puppy face wouldn't work. Uh...right. Was that a tangent? Where was I?

I think he's got an entire full list of songs that he blames on Dean and I think that when other people see them on his iPod he scrolls past them and says he just grabbed a bunch of things offline and he doesn't know what they all are yet (Because he would never admit to liking them even a little) and he really needs to "get around to deleteing them."

Ahahahahah, man does that sound familiar *hides itunes playlist* I wonder if he has a playlist called something like "Blame Dean"? Becuase Sam totally has this snarky sense of humour that doesn't come out nearly enough, but I could see him doing things like that just to amuse himself.

I like that a lot, yeah. I think he's probably really obsessive about certain songs, every once and a while something will just click and he'll listen to it over and over and over until it's burned into his brain forever.

And apprently I really wasn't kidding when I said this was taking over my brain. I can hardly keep track of where I'm at with all this now, and I'm reeeeeeeeally starting to want to take some of this and write fic. Dean bitching when he first sees that Sam has an ipod, maybe Sam trying to make him listen to some songs because he can't not want to foist his music off on Dean, jsut like he used to.

Oh yes, you know he just agreed with Dean for years about music until maybe he turned on the radio one day (Because tapes have been going on forver with Dean) and heard something that he thought sounded cool and Dean switched off in horror.

I wonder if he has a playlist called something like "Blame Dean"? Becuase Sam totally has this snarky sense of humour that doesn't come out nearly enough, but I could see him doing things like that just to amuse himself.

I think it'd be something more like "Fuckhead's Fault" or something like that. Sammy's a snarky bastard and once I have his music down I'm totally shifting them into mixes and naming them.

I like that a lot, yeah. I think he's probably really obsessive about certain songs, every once and a while something will just click and he'll listen to it over and over and over until it's burned into his brain forever.

Oh you know he's got certain songs that he wont even let Dean mock. His sacred cows. And I think he sat Dean down one day and they made out their Sacred Cows (Because Sam's a geek like that) and Dean has trespassed a few times when he really wanted to piss Sam off.

I can hardly keep track of where I'm at with all this now, and I'm reeeeeeeeally starting to want to take some of this and write fic. Oh yes, you know he just agreed with Dean for years about music until maybe he turned on the radio one day (Because tapes have been going on forver with Dean) and heard something that he thought sounded cool and Dean switched off in horror.

Exactly. I think Dean is too particular for the radio, even though he could probably find the obligatory classic rock station he would like, it would just be too random, and he wants to listen to what he wants to listen to exactly when the mood strikes him, but maybe Sam would play with the radio jsut to bug him and try to listen to stuff he liked and Dean would be all "dude, turn that shit OFF or I will push you out your open window"

I think it'd be something more like "Fuckhead's Fault" or something like that. Sammy's a snarky bastard and once I have his music down I'm totally shifting them into mixes and naming them.

Hahaha, YES, perfect. Clearly I was having a momentary lack of inspiration, because "Fuckhead's Fault" is totally it. And you're going to share all this when done, yes?

Oh you know he's got certain songs that he wont even let Dean mock. His sacred cows. And I think he sat Dean down one day and they made out their Sacred Cows (Because Sam's a geek like that) and Dean has trespassed a few times when he really wanted to piss Sam off.

He'd have pens and paper and they'd make lists and he'd get Dean to, like, shake on it or something. But then one day Dean would be all cranky and confrontational for really no good reason and try to start fights about everything and Sam wouldn't bite because he knew what Dean was up to, until he made some snide remarks about 'Lithium' or some song being whiny and pointless and then Sam would crack.

Dude, music related fic is steadily climbing my list of stuff to write. God. My PB fics are going to suffer severly now. Stupid Sam and Dean eating my brain like zombies.

Dean would be all "dude, turn that shit OFF or I will push you out your open window"

That is the most perfect response in the history of ever. Dean would so completely say it and then he would so completely try it too.

And you're going to share all this when done, yes?

Oh but of course. You're gonna share yours too, right?

until he made some snide remarks about 'Lithium' or some song being whiny and pointless and then Sam would crack.

Speaking as someone who has had this fight with her brother I can tell you it goes like this:

Dean: Why do you even listen to that shit?
Sam: It's not shit; it's Nirvana.
Dean: Nirvana is shit.
Sam: No it isn't Dean.
Dean: Yeah it is Sammy.
Sam: I'm not gonna do this.
Dean: You know what?
Sam: What?
Dean: Kurt Cobain killing himself is the best thing that ever happened to Nirvana.
Sam: Dude, shut up.
Dean: Really, if he hadn't've ate that shotgun they'd be playing commercials now and The Foo Fighters would never exist.
Sam: *Doesn't say anything*
Dean: Really, if Kurt Cobain wouldn't have shot himself He'd be sitting at home right now talking about how he used to be famous for a few weeks back in the nineties.
Sam: ...Courtney did it.
Dean: XD

Dude, music related fic is steadily climbing my list of stuff to write. God. My PB fics are going to suffer severly now. Stupid Sam and Dean eating my brain like zombies.

That is the most perfect response in the history of ever. Dean would so completely say it and then he would so completely try it too.

Hahah, he would too, and that's like the greatest image ever, trying not to swerve off the road while also trying to push infuriating Sammy out the window. That's so going to be in...whatever fic I end up writing, here.

Oh but of course. You're gonna share yours too, right?

*is 12* I'll show you mine if you show me yours! And yeah, I'll have at least some kind of playlist to share, eventually.

Ahahahahahahah, oh man, that conversation kills me. And YES, dude, Dean would definitely listen to the Foo Fighter's before Nirvana, would probably even like them when he wasn't trying to piss Sammy off.

Dean: Really, if Kurt Cobain wouldn't have shot himself He'd be sitting at home right now talking about how he used to be famous for a few weeks back in the nineties.

Bahahahahahahahah. Oh, Sammy. Gah, I have turned Sam into such a Nirvana/Cobain nerd in my head, and the more I think about him the more he reminds me of this boy I used to know who was crazy obsessed with Nirvana and slightly emo, but not in an annoying way.

Man, these boys seriously own me now, and my Sam love is just growing and growing today.

Sammy needs massive love too.

Sam's muzak:

Dave Matthews Band, R.E.M(both he listens to when he's feeling mopey), various Jazz artists, Barry White(when he wants to be romantic), Lenny Kravitz(party songs right here!), The White Stripes for a strange blend of stalker/religous fevror. Modest Mouse and other emo stuff 'cause he is an emoboi on the inside.

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure about the jazz or the Barry White but I think DMB and Kravitz and Modest Mouse are pretty fair options.

[identity profile] veradeath.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Jazz and Barry White are when he wants to be in a romantic mood, helps with the atmosphere. ;)

Also, is there a reason not_him_junior hasn't been updated?

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
See Sam trying to me romantic makes me laugh for some reason.

I've realized that I love being LJ to pieces but it's... it's hard to think about anything he can talk about that would talk about online. Especially when I'm playing him and everyone in his apartment/house/whatever. It's a lot harder single-handedly RPing with yourself. Especially when it seems like you and [livejournal.com profile] miss_mandy seem to be the only ones interested in it besides me.

[identity profile] veradeath.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Now that you mention it, Sam being all romanticlike is kinda funny...

I see. That is regrettable, since I at least, was having fun with it. I understand completely.

[identity profile] clex_monkie89.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still trying to do it it's just... difficult. I must find a way to wrangle more people into this.
