[livejournal.com profile] crack_van help.

Okay. I'm about to head home so I'm doing this before I leave.

I'm going to be reccing PB fics for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van eventually as you all may know.

I cannot be at all possible corners of the fandom and so this is where you come in. Find me fics you love, fics that stay with you, ones that won't leave your mind. Find them and link me to them.

OCD Threads are up and icon-coated for your reccing pleasure, rec in the appropriate places please. Pairing and rating are groovy and remember that this doesn't just cover all of LJ, it's anywhere you find the fic.

Remember, it is usually bad taste to rec your own fic, that's what friends are for! Fuck it, who cares about "usually" anyway? There's a spot over here for you to Self-Pimp, come on, do it.

There's also a spot for vids and one for icons/icon makers. Why? Because.

I really should get around to making the Overview...

Dude, if you ever have the opportunity you have to watch some of
Jenncho's vids. They are so good. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd probably say Crawling - features lots of characters, the cuts flow really well with the rythm of the music and there's a darkness to it that fits well with the song. To quote someone from
TWoP: OK, seriously? I've watched the "Crawling" video who knows how many times now and it's moved me more than any episode of PB since "Riots, Drills, and the Devil Part 2." Holy CRAP. If I could chain this girl to her computer and pay her $1 million a year to make PB videos for the rest of her life, I would. Heh. That's a good rec right there. She's done several good ones, but there's a T-Bag one (Shoop) that I love as well.

I just saw her Mad World video at the library a few hours ago. Holy crap it was good! Tomorrow I'm gonna go burn them to disc so I can watch them here.

Totally agree about Jenncho's vids, in fact, I'm the one who wrote that at TWOP. :D So that's my rec for "Crawling". However, the T-Bag "Shoop" video is absolutely absolutely sublime. It's just so perfect and hilarious. Basically, the Shoop song acts as T-Bag's inner monologue, a narration for his actions, and his dialogue with Tweener (which is the best part). Very skillfully crafted. I really can't say which video is better though, one is perfect angst one is perfect humor. If there's any way for you to watch those, do it. Srsly.

That's really all I can rec for you since I don't read fic. :p It took a while for me to even watch videos. I just have a thing about characters I care about being played around with. They would have to be, like, totally in character for me to enjoy it. :p Anyway... yeah watch those vids.

No way! That's hilarious. Had no idea. I knew people at TWoP had said it better than I could and that was the best rec I saw.

And totally agreed on the T-Bag Shoop one. Inner monologue is a perfect way to describe it, especially with so many clips of him swaggering and bumbing chests and such, all preening and proud. So great. Bah, all her videos are just friggin awesome.

Oh man, I'm gonna end up going back to the library tomorrow and burning a bunch of this to disc...

I get that, there are some series that I just... don't read. I don't read because it's... there's too much chance of wrongness happening.

I don't know, like, I only recently discovered that fanfic was this huge thing. In high school, I was huge into Buffy, and I used to frequent this forum called BuffyGuide (wow it's still there!). That was my first fandom, but I wasn't at all aware of fic. Then when I got into the HP internet thing a year or so ago (even though I'd been a fan since book 3), I realized that all these folks were writing stories about these kids. Like, TONS of stories. And it just seemed so... I don't know how to explain it. Like, this may seem weird, but when I get into something, I view the characters as I would a real person. Like, they deserve respect and aren't just there for you to manipulate. Especially like, manipulating kids into sexual situations or doing something they would never do because of who they are. And also it seemed really self-indulgent on the fans' part, to project what I assumed to be their fantasies onto these characters and post them for people read. It just seemed really odd at the time. I've gotten used to it over time, and I realize that really it's just a creative outlet, and these characters are fictional for chrissake, so why not? But it still squicks me out to think about, say, slash between Snape/Harry and incest between Michael/Linc. That's not what I want to be thinking about when I read the books or watch the show, you know? I guess I still have to get used to it.

You know what my prediction is though? Fanfic has become a pretty huge subculture, and I think it's going to start affecting the publishing world. I think there will be internet scouts for publishing houses like there are music scouts for labels, and they'll find new authors that way. Or at least, that's what they should do. Yet one more industry revolutionized by the internet. :)

Shit, that was a long post. :p

I see your point on people messing with the characters in fanfic thing. I mainly got into Fanfic back about... eight years ago or so while hunting for info about Dragonball Z (This is back when it was pretty much only shown on Telemundo here in America) and I came across a story and... it was love.

And I get the squick on Non-Canon pairings, I very rearely read fic on Lost because... The characters are hard to get right and I just don't want to see them butchered up.

Oh man, that sounds awesome and needs to be true becuase there are so many awesome people out there who should be writing professionally but lack the right kind of deals to do so.

I apologize for the muddled response BTW, my sleeping pills are kicking in and my brain is struggling to stay awake.

I'm squicked out by any combination where I think the author is too obviously ignoring the characterisation just to fullfill some kink, whether the kink is LJ getting it on with T-Bag (or Michael) or Michael getting it on with a MarySue or Character A or Character B getting their instant happily ever after with lots and lots of babies.

In that way an out of character schmoopy instant Michael/Sara where both of them sound like twirly teenagers, a fic where Michael randomly declares his love for a cross-dressing MarySue would squick me out pretty much on the same level as T-Bag raping LJ and LJ enjoying it. For me, in fanfiction, the author should ideally serve the characters. When I get the impression that in this case the characters serve the author that's a reason for me not to like a fic.

I think the thing about Prison Break is that there are a lot of violent and sex laden scenarios that would be completely in character. T-Bag raping LJ would no doubt be horrifying, but does anybody doubt that as a character T-Bag would do it in a second if given the chance? Same goes for all fics where T-Bag has fantasies of Michael. Same goes for all fics where T-Bag molests Seth or has sex with Maytag. In these cases, just because people don't like to think about it, doesn't mean that it isn't true and that stuff like this didn't 100% take place between the lines. Of course T-Bag was violently raping Seth while Michael was out exchanging googly eyes with Sara, that's just the nature of the world they live in.
